Government Needs to Seriously Protect Human Rights Defenders

Critical Attitude of Human Rights Defenders

Head of the Legal Division of the Commission for Disappeared Persons and Victims of Violence (KontraS), Andi Muhammad Rezaldy, regretted the repeated terror attacks against human rights defenders, as happened at Veronica's residence.

According to him, the cause of these attacks was due to the critical attitude of human rights defenders in voicing government policies which were deemed not in line with human rights or environmental principles.

"Attacks against human rights defenders are increasing because the government is not serious about providing protection to them," Andi told Asumsi.co by telephone, Monday (11/8/2021).

According to him, many cases were experienced by human rights defenders, but were not disclosed and resolved in the process of investigation or investigation.

"For example, the case that happened to the Executive Director of the Indonesian Forum for the Environment (Walhi) NTB, Murdani, whose house was burned by an unknown person," he said.

In this case, he continued, the police actually carried out an investigation and deepening. However, until now the case has not been fully disclosed and completed.

“The cases of attacks on human rights defenders in this country often stagnate or stagnate. Then by mechanism, there is no special regulation to protect human rights defenders," he added.
