Appointment of Active Military/Police Officers as Regional Officials Triggers Polemic

JAKARTA (VOA) — Two hundred and seventy-one regional heads in Indonesia will have their terms of office expire in 2022 and 2023, while simultaneous elections will only be held in 2024. To cover vacancies, the Ministry of Home Affairs (Kemendagri) is preparing to appoint regional head officials to replace them, both at the provincial and district/city levels.

According to the Ministry of Home Affairs' records, of the 271 regional heads whose terms of office will expire in the near future, 101 regional heads will expire in 2022, and another 170 in 2023.
