Post-reform Papua No longer has the status of a Military Operations Area, Imparsial Questions TNI Mobilization

TRIBUNNEWS.COM, JAKARTA – An NGO that monitors and investigates human rights violations in Indonesia, Imparsial highlights the proliferation of military operations in Papua.

In fact, post-reformation Papua no longer has the status of a military operation area, which means that the earth of Cenderawasih is the same as Jakarta or other areas in Indonesia.

“Before the reformation, Papua was designated as a military operation area. In post-reformation, Papua is no longer designated as a military operation area, meaning that its status is the same as Jakarta, Yogyakarta, and all regions in Indonesia,” said Imparsial researcher Hussein Ahmad in the online discussion 'Armed Violence in Papua: When Will it End?' Friday (10 /12/2021).

Hussein explained that military operations in Papua are often wrapped under the pretext of assisting the police who are handling criminal cases.

But in fact, continued Hussein, the TNI's dispatch to Papua was purely for military operations. Meanwhile, no assistance was found for the police.
