Komnas HAM Will Call Kemenkumham About The Prison Fire

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — The National Human Rights Commission (Komnas HAM) will summon related parties, especially representatives from the Directorate General of Corrections and the Ministry of Law and Human Rights (Kemenkumham) regarding the continuation of the prison fire case on Class I Penentiary in Tangerang, Banten. “We will call all parties, especially Kemenkumham and Ditjenpas about the responsibilities of friends there," said the Commissioner for Monitoring and Investigation Komnas HAM Mohammad Choirul Anam in Jakarta, Thursday (28/10) .

Since the beginning, said Anam, Komnas HAM had sent a team to follow up on the prison fire case that killed dozens of inmates. The arrival of the families of the victims accompanied by the Advocacy Team for Class I Tangerang Prison Fire Victims consisting of LBH Masyarakat (LBH), LBH Jakarta, Imparsial, and LPBH NU Tangerang enriched the data already pocketed by Komnas HAM. Korban Kebakaran Lapas Kelas I Tangerang yang terdiri atas LBH Masyarakat (LBHM), LBH Jakarta, Imparsial, dan LPBH NU Tangerang memperkaya data-data yang telah dikantongi Komnas HAM.

According to Anam, the state's responsibility is not limited to finishing the funeral and giving compensation. However, far from that, the continuity of the heirs must receive attention from related parties. In addition, what is no less important than the tragedy of the Tangerang Class I prison fire is the improvement of the system that must be a concern because this incident should not be repeated in the future.

Meanwhile, the Advocacy Team for Burning Victims, represented by Ma'ruf Bajammal, conveyed three main points regarding the incident. First, asking the government to restore the status of the dead by granting mass amnesty to the victims.

Second, encourage the government to have good intentions to provide appropriate compensation according to the needs of each victim's family. And third, to ask Komnas HAM to follow up on reports of alleged human rights violations over the Tangerang prison fire.
