Civil Society Coalition Urges Police Not to Continue Reporting Luhut and Moeldoko

SINDONEWS.C0M.JAKARTA – The Police have been urged not to follow up on criminal reporting from the Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Luhut Binsar Panjaitan and the President's Chief of Staff Moeldoko against a number of activists. The insistence was from the Civil Society Coalition for Serious Revision of the ITE Law.

"Because the actions taken by Haris Azhar, Fatia Maulidiyanti to Egi Primayogha and Miftahul Choir are purely part of the freedom of expression, opinion and work of human rights defenders guaranteed by the Constitution and the Law," said the Representative of the Serious Civil Society Coalition, ITE Act Revision, who is also the Executive Director of the Legal Aid Institute (LBH) Press, Ade Wahyudin in his written statement, Thursday (23/9/2021).

In addition, the Serious Civil Society Coalition, ITE Act Revision, also urges the Metro Jaya Police Chief Inspector General Fadli Imran to give instructions so that police investigators comply with the contents of the Decree of the Ministry of Communication and Information, the Prosecutor's Office, and the Police which regulates the guidelines for the interpretation of the ITE Act as a form of obedience to the law. Then, the civil society coalition also urged the National Human Rights Commission and the Witness and Victim Protection Agency to provide guarantees of protection for Haris Azhar, Fatia Maulidiyanti to Egi Primayogha and Miftahul Choir who were both charged with the libel article in the ITE Act.

The civil society coalition also urges the government and the DPR to immediately revise the ITE Law, especially on problematic articles to create legal certainty and justice. The Serious Civil Society Coalition, ITE Law Revision, consists of more than 20 organizations. They include AJI Indonesia, Amnesty International Indonesia, ELSAM, Forum-Asia, Greenpeace Indonesia, ICJR, Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW), IJRS, Imparsial, Indonesian Women's Coalition, KontraS, KPJKB Makassar, LBH Apik, LBH Jakarta, LBH Masyarakat, LBH Pers LeIP, PAKU ITE, PBHI, PUSKAPA UI, PSHK, Rumah Cemara, SAFEnet, WALHI, and YLBHI.

It is known, Luhut reported the Director of Lokataru Haris Azhar and the chief of KontraS Fatia Maulidiyanti to Polda Metro Jaya on Wednesday September 22nd, 2021. Luhut reported Haris Azhar and Fatia using the defamation article in the ITE Law and also filed a Rp100 billion civil lawsuit.

Previously, the Advocacy Team for Haris Azhar and Fatia Maulidiyanti had received two subpoenas from Luhut regarding the statement made by Fatia Maulidiyanti in the program NgeHAMtam on Haris Azhar's Youtube channel. Meanwhile, Moeldoko reported anti-corruption activists Egi Primayogha and Miftahul Choir from Indonesia Corruption Watch on September 10th, 2021. Moeldoko did not accept ICW's research report which mentioned their alleged involvement in the production of the drug Ivermectin.
